Every baby’s arrival should be a moment of celebration but when a baby is born too early, those joyful expectations are often replaced by fear, uncertainty and a desperate hope that the tiny newborn will survive.Since opening its doors in November 2023, Babies Matter Medical Centre has helped more than 161 premature and critically ill babies overcome those odds, giving families the chance to take their little ones home healthy and strong. Some of these babies were born as early as 25 weeks into pregnancy, while others weighed as little as 520 grammes at birth. Their journeys were difficult but with specialist neonatal care and dedicated medical support, they were given a fighting chance. For the team at Babies Matter, every successful discharge is more than a medical achievement, it is a family’s dream restored.Clinical Lead and Co-founder, Dr Zainab Mudasiru, says the earliest moments after birth are often the most critical.”At Babies Matter, every minute counts. We have seen babies born too early, too sick, or too small go home simply because they received the right care within the first two hours after birth.”She explains that babies born prematurely need specialist support immediately after delivery to reduce the risk of complications and improve their chances of survival.”Preferably, our neonatal team should be present at the delivery so they can take charge of the baby from the moment they are born. “Delays in accessing proper neonatal support often lead to complications, disabilities, or death, outcomes that can be prevented with swift action.”Babies Matter therefore encourages stronger collaboration between obstetricians, maternity hospitals and neonatal specialists to ensure high-risk babies receive expert care without delay.Mudasiru believes every premature baby deserves an equal opportunity to survive and thrive. She says the hospital’s experience has shown that specialised neonatal care can change what once seemed impossible.”Premature babies deserve a fair start at life. With timely intervention and collaboration among hospitals, IVF clinics, and surrogacy agencies, we can give every tiny life the best possible chance to thrive.”At Babies Matter, we have built a system that ensures every premature or critically ill baby has access to world-class neonatal care right here in Lagos. Our goal is to give families hope, to show that even the tiniest babies can survive and thrive with the right care.”Reflecting on the hospital’s mission, Mudasiru says the work goes beyond treating newborns.”As a team, we are not just saving lives; we are giving hope to families who once believed their babies had no chance of survival.”Every baby who leaves Babies Matter is a reminder that hope, expert care and timely intervention can transform the smallest beginnings into brighter futures.”
