Every baby’s arrival should be a moment of celebration. But when a baby is born too early, that joy can quickly be replaced by fear, uncertainty and the desperate hope that the tiny newborn will survive.
Since opening its doors in November 2023, Babies Matter Medical Centre (BMMC) has supported more than 161 premature and critically ill babies, helping families bring their little ones home healthy and strong. Some of these babies were born as early as 25 weeks, while others weighed as little as 520 grammes at birth.
Their journeys were challenging, but with specialist neonatal care, timely intervention and dedicated medical support, these babies were given a fighting chance. For the BMMC team, every successful discharge represents more than a medical achievement — it is a family’s dream restored.
According to Dr. Zainab Mudasiru, Clinical Lead and Co-Founder of BMMC, the moments immediately following birth can be critical for premature and critically ill newborns.
“At Babies Matter, every minute counts. We have seen babies born too early, too sick, or too small go home simply because they received the right care within the first two hours after birth.”
She explained that premature babies often require specialized support immediately after delivery to reduce complications and improve their chances of survival.
“Preferably, our neonatal team should be present at the delivery so they can take charge of the baby from the moment they are born.”
Delays in accessing appropriate neonatal care can increase the risk of serious complications, disability or death — outcomes that may be reduced through swift and appropriate intervention.
BMMC advocates stronger collaboration between obstetricians, maternity hospitals and neonatal specialists, ensuring that high-risk babies can access expert care without unnecessary delays.
Dr. Mudasiru believes every premature baby deserves a fair opportunity to survive and thrive, and says the centre’s experience demonstrates what is possible when timely intervention and specialized care come together.
“Premature babies deserve a fair start at life. With timely intervention and collaboration among hospitals, IVF clinics, and surrogacy agencies, we can give every tiny life the best possible chance to thrive.”
At BMMC, the goal is to ensure that premature and critically ill newborns have access to advanced neonatal care right here in Lagos, while giving families the confidence and hope they need during one of the most difficult periods of their lives.
For the BMMC team, the mission extends beyond medical treatment.
